Australia eye 400 plus total

Australian opener Simon Katich Thursday said Australia have in mind a target in excess of 400 for India in the first innings.

Katich, who opened along with Matthew Hayden, was involved in a 166-run partnership with Ricky Ponting after Hayden was dismissed for a duck in the first over.

"We are looking at going past 400 tomorrow, runs on the board will help put pressure on India," said Katich after Australia ended day one at 254 for four at Bangalore on Thursday.

Katich rued the loss of Michael Clarke in the final over saying that they would have been in an even stronger position had 'pup' been there to take matters forward on Friday.

"It was unfortunate that we lost Clarke, but we already have a 250 plus score and our batsmen can still post a big total."

Asked about the pressure he felt after the dismissal of Hayden, the southpaw said: "It was nice to get an opportunity at the top of the order and the partnership with Ricky was crucial.

"We got a good hit out prior to the Test match, especially at Jaipur and then at Hyderabad."

The 166-run partnership is the second best by an Australian pair for any wicket at Bangalore, next only to the 167 between Michael Clarke and Adam Gilchrist for the sixth wicket in 2004-05.

Katich, who played the sheet anchor role to perfection, finally fell for 66. This was ninth fifty in Tests and his fifth against India.
