Ponting takes positives from draw

Ricky Ponting feels Australia will be confident for the remainder of the India series despite failing to win in Bangalore.

The Australians held the upper hand for the majority of the match in Bangalore but were forced to settle for a draw after only managing to take four Indian wickets on the final day.

Their failure to expose the home batting on a wearing wicket prompted India paceman Zaheer Khan to claim Ponting's side were "on the back foot" because they "know they can't take 20 wickets".

Unsurprisingly, the Australia captain dismissed those taunts instead preferring to focus on the performance of his own team, most of whom had never played a Test in India before.

Only four of the Australian team had played a Test in India before the Bangalore match - Ponting, Matthew Hayden, Michael Clarke and Simon Katich - and their skipper believes they will be better for the experience.

"The more exposure you give those guys the better off they are going to be," Ponting said. "There was a lot of talk about our inexperience coming here and I think these guys have done a pretty good job for us.

"They will be better off after this for sure."

Ponting reserved special praise for debutant Cameron White, who captured the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar on the final day, while also highlighting the contributions of Brad Haddin and Shane Watson.

"It's been a pretty good game for all those guys," Ponting said.

"Cameron didn't have much of an opportunity to bat, but I think he's coming along in leaps and bounds with his bowling.

"I think he has met my expectations with what he's done."

He added: "Haddin's batting was terrific, Watson's bowled very well for us in the first innings and he batted well in the second innings.

"It was a pretty tough wicket to keep on and he (Haddin) dropped only one catch which didn't cost us much."

India captain Anil Kumble was similarly content with his side's display, claiming they have the quality to win back the Border-Gavaskar trophy in the remaining three Tests.

"All of us had a pretty reasonable game and our batsmen are confident going into the next game (starting in Mohali on Friday)," he said.

"As a team, we are certainly really confident about going there and winning the Test match and the series.

"We will be looking to put the runs on the board and get the 20 wickets. We have the quality. That's our aim and we are looking forward to it."

Kumble praised under-fire batsman VVS Laxman, who had made a vital 42 not out on the final day, to keep the Australians at bay.

"Laxman has been a true champion, playing 97 Test matches for India," he said.

"He has been a major contributor to India's victories on all those occasions. He's a fabulous player.

"It's unfortunate that people put an axe to his head every time something happens. But its not just him. That happens to every cricketer."
