India regain momentum

Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly relived the memories as India finished day one of the second Test at 311 for five.

STUMPS

Sachin Tendulkar went past Brian Lara's record and even went past the 12,000-run mark. Even though he fell 12 runs short of what should have been a hundred in the taking, Tendulkar and Ganguly put on a classic partnership to rescue India after the hosts lost three wickets in a hurry. At stumps, India were 311 for four with Ganguly unbeaten on 54 and night watchman Ishant Sharma not out on two.

Afternoon Session

Australia have struck back in the post-lunch session with the wickets of Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. Sachin Tendulkar is just two runs away from becoming the highest scorer in Test cricket. But rest assured, that will be the last thing on his mind right now. At tea, India are 174 for four.

Morning Session

After Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat, Gambhir and Sehwag got India off to a flyer. Mitchell Johnson sent back Sehwag for a run-a-ball 35. But Gambhir was no mood to relent and his fantastic strokeplay was a pleasure to watch. India dominate the first session as they go in for lunch at 104 for one.

Toss and Teams:

India's stand-in skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat. Anil Kumble, out with a sore shoulder, has been replaced by leg spinner Amit Mishra who makes his Test debut. For Australia pacer Peter Siddle gets his baggy green cap in place of the injured Stuart Clark.

India: MS Dhoni, Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir, Sourav Ganguly, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, VVS Laxman, Amit Mishra, Virender Sehwag, Ishant Sharma, Sachin Tendulkar.

Australia: Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin, Matthew Hayden, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Simon Katich, Brett Lee, Ricky Ponting, Peter Siddle, Shane Watson, Cameron White.

Pre-Match

Hello and welcome to our coverage of the first day's play in the second Test between India and Australia at Mohali on Friday.

After the drawn Test in Bangalore, the series is wide open. The pitch looks good, there's a good amount of grass cover and it's hard. There will be extra bounce for the bowlers and the captain winning the toss will undoubtedly elect to bat.
