Gambhir ton puts India on top

An enterprising ton by Gautam Gambhir on his home turf helped India dominate day one of the third Test at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

STUMPS

Gambhir and Laxman batted majestically in the post Teas session to ensure India did not lose any wickets. Laxman raced to a brilliant half century and helped put India in a dictating position. The hosts ended the day at 296 for three.

Afternoon Session

Tendulkar and Gambhir continued to dominate the afternoon session with fine fifties. However, Tendulkar perished right at the stroke of Tea, letting the Aussies sniff some kind of a comeback into the match. Gambhir will resume battle with Laxman post Tea.

Morning Session

It was a see-saw session with Australia dominating the first hour with Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson picking up vital wickets before Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir strung a good partnership. Honours are even at the end of the first session. At lunch, India are 67 for two.

Toss and Teams

Anil Kumble won the toss and promptly decided to bat. The Indian captain received a warm welcome from the crowd the moment he stepped in for the toss. "The emphasis is on finishing the series here," he said after the toss. Australian captain Ricky Ponting though disappointed with losing the toss, said he expected a lot better showing from his team in this match.

The team news is that Harbhajan Singh has not recovered from the toe injury and therefore, Amit Mishra will continue to be in the playing XI. For Australia, Stuart Clark is back and making way for him is Peter Siddle.

India: Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, MS Dhoni, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra.

Pre-Match

Hello and welcome to our coverage of the third Test between India and Australia at the Ferozeshah Kota in Delhi on Wednesday, a day after Diwali. It's a bit hazy but the sun is expected to come out shinning brightly and the temperatures will be in the mid 20s.

There is some grass on the wicket, but no moisture at all. The ball will swing a bit initially but all in all it's a batsman's paradise. The captain who wins the toss should elect to bat first.
