Gayle targets 'dangerous' KP
Stanford Superstars captain Chris Gayle is gunning for Kevin Pietersen in Saturday's clash for cash against England.
Gayle has kept in touch with close friend and opposite number Pietersen since they lined up together for an ICC World XI three years ago in the Super Series in Australia. As respective dangermen for their teams, they would go head to head in the event of a Stanford Super Over, the way of settling the $20million match in the event of a tie.
"Hopefully I am going to kick his you know what," said Gayle. "We first met for the games in Australia when we were playing for the World XI and we have built a good relationship from there.
"He is a good guy who has rallied his team really well as the new captain.
"He is aware of situations on the field, knows his gameplan and knows his cricket and so on and so forth.
"He is a dangerous player, there is no doubt about it, but I have told him I will get him out already."
The inaugural Stanford Super Series encounter offers the opportunity for individuals to walk away with $1million dollars.
But team unity will also play a part and that might give England, playing for their country rather than what is effectively a franchise team, an advantage.
However, Gayle said: "It doesn't matter which team I am playing for, I just try to get the job done.
"That's how I play cricket, I have been picked to produce and you have to give it your all out there.
"All the guys have been training hard and it will be really disappointing to walk away empty handed. It is a game of cricket so whatever happens life still goes on, but it will really hurt to lose this game."
The showpiece encounter will be played on the same surface used for the Superstars' 58-run demolition of Middlesex last night, in which youngsters Andre Fletcher and Kieron Pollard highlighted the raw power in the home ranks.
Twenty-year-old Fletcher cracked seven sixes in his unbeaten 90 while Pollard hit four maximums from just nine balls as they outshone stellar trio Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
"It was good that guys stood up to the plate without the performances of some of the bigger players," said Gayle.
"The main focus has been on us, we haven't really contributed anything as yet, but it is good to see Fletcher in the runs with Pollard and Sylvester Joseph at the end there. We are all hungry for it."
Gayle, meanwhile, who has yet to discuss his final team with the selection panel, could not resist a pre-match jibe at his opponents' line-up following the omission of James Anderson.
"I am a bit scared of Anderson, so that's a good one," he said. "He swings the ball a bit, so I am glad he is not playing, and Ryan Sidebottom."
