Chance for India to go up the ladder

A whitewash in the seven-match ODI series against England will see India jump to second place in the ICC rankings.

The visitors can reach there with a 5-2 series victory.

India, who are already placed second in Test rankings, are currently in fifth place with 113 ratings points.

They can gain seven points with a clean sweep taking their points tally to 120, which is one more than the team currently in second place - South Africa.

If India wins the series 4-3 it will move above New Zealand into fourth place and a series win of 5-2 or 6-1 will ensure it overtakes Kevin Pietersen's team and into third position on the table.

England also have the chance to go above the Proteas into second place if they win the series 5-2 or better.

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will have to put in some strong performances if he is to defend his top position in the Player Rankings as Australia's Mike Hussey is not far behind in second place.

Sachin Tendulkar has been rested for the first three matches and may slip a place or two from current eighth position as a result.

The seven-match series will begin at Rajkot on Friday.
