PCB appoint selection pair

The PCB named former bowler Salim Jaffar and batsman Shoaib Mohammad as members of the national selection committee.

The pair will work alongside legendary leg-spinner Abdul Qadir, who was appointed chairman of selectors yesterday.

A PCB statement read: "They have been appointed as a full-time, paid selection committee and will be responsible for selecting the national cricket team and Pakistan 'A' team."

Jaffar had been acting as chief selector on the interim selection committee, of which Mohammad was also a member.

Today's appointments are the latest in a series of changes since Ijaz Butt succeeded Nasim Ashraf as PCB chairman last month.

Javed Miandad has taken up the post of director general with Aamir Sohail assuming the job of director of the national cricket academy.

Qadir, 53, was yesterday appointed chief selector and immediately promised sweeping changes in selection policy.

"It's an honour for me to be selected for this important job," Qadir said.

"I see it as a challenge. I will introduce a 'justice-based' selection policy that gives a fair chance to every first-class cricketer who does well in domestic tournaments."

While lobbying for the post, the outspoken Qadir had been critical of both the PCB and players.

"I've never liked the way (national) teams were selected in the past. There were always question marks on some of the decisions," he added. "But I will have an open policy."
