Aaron Redmond helped New Zealand reach tea on the first day of the second Test against Australia today 196 for four at Adelaide Oval.

The visitors added 95 for the loss of three wickets in the second session with Ross Taylor unbeaten on 40 and Daniel Flynn new to the crease.

Redmond looked to be heading for a maiden Test century, but took on spinner Nathan Hauritz one too many times as his 83 run stand was ended as the aggressive opener added 18 runs to his lunch time tally before being caught by Andrew Symonds at deep midwicket.

Hauritz, who was a late inclusion to the Australia side, started the contest terribly but hit back with two wickets after lunch to improve his figures to 63 for two.

Symonds took a wicket two overs before the break while Mitchell Johnson removed Jamie How before lunch.

The Kiwis will be satisfied with their progress but frustrated they were not in a better position with all four of the dismissed batsmen throwing away their wickets.

After reaching lunch 101 for one after How (16) was caught behind by Brad Haddin of Johnson, Jesse Ryder (13) was left red faced five balls into the middle session after pulling a short Hauritz delivery to Michael Clarke at a wide mid-on.

Redmond, who took the game by the scruff of the neck during the morning's play, went eight overs later.

His slog sweep, which saw him smash consecutive sixes of the spinner to bring up his half century, was his downfall as he holed out to Symonds after adding 68 of his tally through boundaries and sixes.

His dismissal was sweet revenge for Hauritz who took a hammering in his opening spell - the New South Wales player had 29 runs taken off three overs in a nervous start.

Australia made inroads but could have been in a better position too after Taylor was caught off a Brett Lee no-ball when he was on five while Peter Fulton was given a chance when he had scored just nine runs.

Fulton (29) was the last Kiwi dismissed before tea as he pulled a short ball off Symonds and was caught by Simon Katich.

Earlier, New Zealand built momentum beautifully in the first session after their openers made a cautious start to the day.

They made just nine runs in the first seven overs before hitting seven boundaries in six overs with Redmond's off-side play a feature.

He and How put on 46 for the first wicket before How was dismissed as Johnson bowled him an accurate bouncer, a full pitched delivery before sucking him in with a wide delivery outside off stump which the right-hander edged to Haddin after going for a big drive.
