India selectors set for landmark decisions
The Indian selection committee will meet on Thursday to pick the team for the two Tests against England with history in sight.
Two of India's greatest cricketers, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble would not be available for selection after more than a decade of glorious consistency.
Both the former India captains retired at the end of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where India beat Australia 2-0.
While, Kumble's slot would be filled up by the promising Amit Mishra from Haryana, it is Ganguly's spot that would keep the selectors confined to their chairs a while longer.
Consider this. YUvraj Singh has roared back to phenomenal form with two stunning back to back tons against England in the first two ODI's. He has been bowling his slow left-armers better than ever.
The only problem with Yuvraj, feel some experts is consistency. He did have his moments, with two spectacular centuries against Pakistan, one of which was at home.
Also in line are S. Badrinath and according to some media reports, a young crackerjack called Cheteswar Pujara.
While, Bardri was a part of the team for the Australia series, Pujara finds his name doing the rounds on the back of some solid performances in the ongoing Ranji season.
Another tricky turner could be Rahul Dravid, who has held up the Indian batting like a rock over the years since his sensational debut at Lord's. His form over the last 12 months, if anything has been average. He has struggled with his footwork and has shuffled way across for the most mediocre of medium-pacers.
In fact, after his poor outing against the Aussies, there were muted words suggesting Dravid would not be able to make it to the side for the England series.
It would be an interesting few hours till the team is finally announced. The rest of the batting order from openers Virender Sehewag, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and MS Dhoni pick themselves.
The bowling department would primarily rest on pace spearheads Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma and spin wizard Harbhajan Singh and new-comer Mishra, who created ripples with his five wicket haul on debut.
According to sources, there could also be a toss-up between leggie Piyush Chawla and left-arm seamer RP Singh, who seems to have lost his footing after a fearsome burst in India's victory against Australia in Perth.
Chief selector Krishnamachari Srikanth and his men would not be tested much but the Ganguly factor would certainly play on their minds. Finding a potential replacement for a man who has never averaged below 40 throughout his Test career will be tough, to put it mildly.
