Mendis doubtful for Sri Lanka

Mendis doubtful for Sri Lanka

23-year-old Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis is a doubt for the tour of Bangladesh due to an ankle injury.

The 23-year-old was named in a 15-member squad announced last week for the Tests and the one-day series in Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka are due to play two Tests against Bangladesh and are also scheduled to feature in a triangular one-day series with Zimbabwe as the third team.

But Mendis injured his ankle while making an appeal during the one-day series in Zimbabwe last month, the Daily Mirror reported.

He has been advised three weeks of rest which would effectively rule him out of the first Test which is scheduled to begin on December 26.

Mendis is due to receive a full medical report on his injury later today.

Mendis has been Sri Lanka's top bowler this year, claiming 48 wickets in 18 one-dayers. He claimed 15 wickets in the five matches in Zimbabwe which Sri Lanka won 5-0.

Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene had said his side was looking for convincing wins in Bangladesh.

"We are approaching this series very seriously," Jayawardene said.

"Bangladesh has come a long way especially in the last six months.

"In addition we do not have any international cricket for about four to five months after this series, so it takes on even more significance.

"Obviously we will be going all out to win both the Test and triangular series."

Should Mendis be declared unfit, left-arm spinner Rangana Herath is the front runner to take his place.
