A disciplined West Indies bowling attack ensured New Zealand made slow progress in reply to the tourists' first innings total of 307 on day two of the second Test in Napier.

The Black Caps had laboured to 74 for one at tea with Daniel Flynn 37 not out having finally wrapped up the West Indies innings during the morning session at McLean Park.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul was left stranded on 126 not out as the tourists added 49 runs to their overnight total with Iain O'Brien finishing with Test-best figures of six for 75 after taking four for 16 in the first session of the day.

Resuming on 258 for six, Chanderpaul provided the only resistance as right-arm seamer O'Brien took the wickets of Jerome Taylor (18), Sulieman Benn (0), Daren Powell (six) and Edwards (0) as the West Indies' first innings ended on 307.

O'Brien combined with wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum to remove Taylor, Benn and Powell before deceiving Edwards with a slower yorker.

New Zealand survived the nine overs required before lunch without losing a wicket but the opening partnership between Jamie How and Tim McIntosh was soon ended.

Edwards claimed a wicket with his first ball of the match, dismissing How for 12 as the opener latched on to a pitched up delivery only to see Sewnarine Chattergoon produce an amazing reflex catch at square leg.

McIntosh had compiled an unbeaten 21 but the opener was handed an unlikely lifeline on 14 when he skied an attempted pull off Fidel Edwards.

The bowler and wicketkeeper Dinesh Ramdin both closed in on what would have been a simple catch but both inexplicably stopped and the ball dropped harmlessly between the pair.

Flynn briefly injected some life into proceedings when he struck Brendan Nash for successive sixes over mid-wicket but it was heavy going for the most part as the West Indies gave little away.

Play was then suspended due to bad light during the final session with New Zealand on 119 for one, Flynn having completed a patient half-century.

After a delay following rain, play subsequently resumed although conditions were still proving slippery underfoot.
