Jeetan Patel took two wickets in two balls in the morning, removing Xavier Marshall (18) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (0) to leave the tourists reeling on 106 for four. But Gayle and Nash restored stability to the West Indies inning by batting through the second session.
Gayle reached the century mark by singling to point off James Franklin and was 118 not out at the interval while Nash compiled a patient 60 to give the West Indies a 160 run lead.
The tourists resumed on 62 for two, still two runs behind the hosts, and after Marshall and Gayle each survived early lbw referrals to the third umpire, New Zealand were rewarded for their patience and endeavour.
Patel tempted Marshall to play at a delivery which was spinning away from the outside edge and Ross Taylor took the catch at first slip.
The 28-year-old Kiwi was celebrating his second wicket of the day with the very next ball as
Chanderpaul, who was left stranded on 126 in the first innings, returned to the pavilion after facing one delivery.
Chanderpaul attempted to push a full toss from Patel down the ground, but the bowler took the catch for his third victim of the innings.
