Malik to remain Pakistan captain
Shoaib Malik's tenure as captain of the Pakistan cricket team is set to be extended, PCB chairman Ijaz Butt confirmed.
Malik was appointed to the role by former chairman Nasim Ashraf when Inzamam-ul Haq stepped down after Pakistan crashed out in the first round of the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean but his two-year term ended earlier this week.
However, his style of captaincy has been criticised by several former players including ex-captains Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and even Intikhab Alam prior to his appointment as coach of the team.
Prolific batsman Mohammad Yousuf also blamed Malik for his defection to the unauthorised Indian Cricket League.
"Good job in recent times"
Malik`s reign began with a string of losses but improved performances and better relations with Alam and his team-mates has paved the way for him to remain in charge.
"Shoaib Malik will remain as the Pakistan captain as long as he continues to deliver," Butt said.
"I believe that he has done a good job in recent times."
Meanwhile, the PCB refuted reports of a player revolt over the terms of their new central contracts.
"Let Malik stay on as captain for year"
Senior players in the team were reportedly reluctant to sign their new deals due to a drastic cut in players' salaries.
The old contracts expired earlier this week.
The PCB revealed Alam had been entrusted with the job of speaking to the players regarding the issue.
"We have given him (Alam) an outline of what we feel should be the terms and conditions of the new contracts and he will add suggestions from the players," PCB chief operating officer Saleem Altaf said.
"Chief selector Abdul Qadir will then give us a list of players who would be awarded central contracts.
"The question of players revolting or being unhappy with the terms of the contracts does not arise as we have not yet formalised the terms of the contracts."
