India eves get ready for World Cup
Sportscenter take a look at Indian women cricket team's preparation for the upcoming Women’s World Cup in March 2009.
Women’s World Cup is just a month away and Indian team is leaving no stone unturned to fix the areas that can see them excel at the mega tournament.
At a stint in National Cricket Academy at Bangalore, fitness is the priority for the ladies.
Jump, jump, jump, jump higher.....that is precisely what physios and trainers at the NCA are making the India's women cricketers do.
Women's cricket in India has often felt that lack of strength while playing against stronger oppositions like Australia, England and South Africa. So, now they are busy strengthening their muscles by pulling a lot of weight.
"I think the fitness training programme is very good. We do our fitness regime regularly but here at the NCA we can avail the latest technology. This will help us improve even further," said India women's team captain Jhulan Goswami.
To this the coach Sudha Shah added, "At the NCA the fitness and performance of the players get recorded, which this will surely help the girls in the future."
During their Camp for the World Cup, the ladies also took fellow gentleman cricketer -- RP Singh's help to excel in gentlewomen's game. While VVS Laxman also gave the girls some pep talk.
VVS Laxman came and had a chat with the girls, which of course was very encouraging. When you get some words of encouragement from such a senior player, who has excelled in all forms of the game, it boosts your morale. And if we can use it to our great advantage that will be great for us," said senior member Anjum Chopra.
Indian team was the runners-up of the last World Cup in 2005 and they are hoping that the all-important help from the NCA and male counterparts will give them that extra edge to go one step further.
