Jenner: Warne is a clever man

Shane Warne came in for praise from his former bowling coach Terry Jenner when he termed the player a clever man.

Jenner, who was in Kochi to train 20 young spinners, including a girl, told reporters that Warne can single handedly take Rajasthan Royals to win the IPL tourney because "he has a clever brain and he is a very good cricketer.

"Warne got the best from his team members while he played. "Warne is physically fit and he could bowl six leg breaks in an over each with different variation." On whether Warne's retirement was premature, Jenner, currently the coach of Australian Cricket Academy, Adelaide, said "No."

Warne has given his heart for Australia when he played, he said, adding "Warne's bowling is tried and he is bowling more straight ones." On speculation that Warne may come back to international cricket as Australia has been doing badly recently, Jenner said "no".

"What he (Warne) can win by making a come back into the side. Will his past quality come back?" he asked.

Pointing out that Australia is going through a bad patch currently, he said looking at the way Australia played in New Zealand it looks like they are not going to win. Australia went through a bad patch in the mid 80s when Allan Border took over and when Warne came into the world of test cricket. It was not the first time such a thing had happened, he said.

He said he has found that the young spinners in Chennai have the desire and passion. "The standard of kids at Chennai is very good. We worked on the basics and tried to improve their actions. We do not expect to produce miracles. They will definitely have opportunity to improve here," he said.

He said the game had not changed that much in terms of development, but changes had taken place in areas like small boundaries, thick bats and professional cricketers all over the world.

Jenner said his role was to improve the player and not change his bowling action. The changes in the game made huge impact on spin bowling, he said and added "modern cricket is dot ball cricket." Lauding legendary spinners including Anil Kumble, Muthiah Muralidharan and Warne, he said "we are fortunate that they have played during our life time."
