Jhulan positive of India's chances
Indian skipper Jhulan Goswami says that she is delighted that ESPN STAR Sports will broadcast Women's World Cup.
She said that the team has sorted out the weak links after their eye-opening England and Australia tours last year and the team is now well prepared for next month's women's cricket World Cup.India were blanked 0-4 and 0-5 by England and Australia respectively but Jhulan said since the tours ended months before the quadrennial extravaganza, they have given the team enough time to improve.
"In terms of World Cup preparations, both series provided us with the chance to evaluate where we stood with ample time to find a way to lift our standard. Such series on eve of World Cup might not have been productive as they could have shattered our confidence or left us with no time to rectify.
"By playing three months prior to the main event, we have given ourselves a very good chance to put ourselves back in track. It was also a good wake-up call for us," Jhulan said.
Skipper exuded confidence
The fast bowler exuded confidence that her can win the World Cup, to be held in Australia from March 7 to 22, but to do that they have to play well consistently.
"I believe we have a good chance, better than before to win the trophy but for that we will have to play consistently well and not only play well but to try to raise standard with every match," said Jhulan, who was ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year in 2007.
India were runners-up to Australia in the previous edition in South Africa in 2005 and are placed in Group A along with Sri Lanka, Pakistan and England this time. Jhulan refused to take Sri Lanka and Pakistan lightly though India have unbeaten record against the two countries.
"We enjoy a good record against Pakistan and Sri Lanka who are inexperienced but we must not forget that both teams will be playing in the World Cup which is a completely different tournament. And history shows what can happen in World Cups," she said.
Jhulan has so far played 93 ODIs and if India qualify for the final to be played on March 22 at the North Sydney Oval, that match will be her 100th ODI.
"Playing 100 ODIs will be a perfect icing on the cake after winning ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year award in 2007 and became India captain in last October. But winning World Cup will bring huge honour to the country while completing century of ODIs will only be a personal landmark," she said.
"I won't hesitate calling Dhoni"
Jhulan said she will not think twice to ring up Indian men's team captain Mahendra Dhoni for guidance, if required.
"If I need any guidance and advice, I will not hesitate to call up Dhoni and I am sure he would reciprocate. I will not only get a priceless suggestion from Dhoni but his pep-talk with the players can do magic and further lift the spirit of the players.
India open their World Cup campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on March 7 at Bradman Oval.
