"Our aim is to reach super six stage"

Pakistan women's team captain Urooj Mumtaz said that reaching super six of the WWC would be a big achievement.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has been spending lot of funds on women's cricket since the last two years when a proper female cricket wing was formed in the PCB after the ICC took women's cricket under its wings.

Urooj admitted that Pakistan is still in learning stages as far as women's cricket was concerned.

"No one takes women's sports seriously in Pakistan and I tell the girls this is your chance to show everyone that they should take women in sports seriously," Urooj said.

The 15-member Pakistan squad is an interesting blend of girls from different backgrounds with Urooj, who comes from a privileged background studying in her final year to be a dentist like her father.

The team also includes others like Sana Mir who is doing her masters in economics and come from Abbotabad, a small town in the North West Frontier Province.

"In small cities and towns normally parents frown upon their daughters taking part in any sporting activity. But I am lucky I have come this far. Playing the World Cup is like a dream come true for me," she said.

The youngest member of the team, 17-year-old Bismah was of the view that women, who are interested in sports, still had to face problems in Pakistan.

"But times are changing and I want to do well in the World Cup so that more and more girls take to playing cricket," she said.

In a country where security forces are fighting insurgence from Taliban and other Islamic militants who want to enforce their brand of Shariah laws in the tribal areas and NWFP province, the Pakistan women team's participation in the World Cup sets a good example of the struggle between ultra conservative and moderate Pakistanis.

The team's strike bowler, Qanita Jalil also comes from Abbotabad and said she would not have made it this far without the support of her brothers.
