Smith returns for Proteas

Graeme Smith will return from injury to captain South Africa in the ODIs against Australia after being named in a 14-man squad.

The squad has been named for the first two matches on Monday.

The left-hander missed the final Test against Ricky Ponting's team that ended on Sunday due to a broken finger in his right hand sustained during the second game in Durban.

The rest of team has a familiar look with selectors opting to retain the same players who did duty during the Proteas' 4-1 triumph over the Australians on their own turf earlier this year.

That means that Warriors paceman Wayne Parnell and Lions batsman Vaughn van Jaarsveld both retain their places, with the only player missing out being Lonwabo Tsotsobe, currently nursing a knee injury.

The biggest boost for the hosts though will be the return of Smith, who missed the series Down Under through injury.

Convener of selectors Mike Procter said: "We have kept faith with the squad that won their series in Australia and brought back Graeme Smith now that he is over his injuries.

"It is possible that we will add other players to the squad depending on performance in the two Pro20 matches this weekend."

South Africa play the first of two Twenty20 internationals in Johannesburg on Friday, followed by the second in Pretoria on Sunday, before embarking on a five-match ODI series beginning in Durban on April 3.

South Africa squad: Graeme Smith (captain), Hashim Amla, Johan Botha, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Makhaya Ntini, Wayne Parnell, Dale Steyn, Vaughn van Jaarsveld.
