Oz U-19 go down in first match

The Australia Under-19 side has gone down to India Under-19 by seven wickets in the opening limited overs match.

Both the teams would be locking horns five times.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first, however the hosts could manage only and were all out for 168 in 48 overs with the visitors chasing the runs required with more than five overs remaining.

"South Australian Joel Garrett top scored for the home side with well compiled 29, however with another three batters out in the 20s and another four out between 10 and 20, the hosts lost wickets at steady intervals to some tight bowling from the Indian spinners," a Cricket Australia release said.

Tom Beaton and Nic Maddinson (26 from 53) got the innings off to a solid start with a 41-run opening partnership, as Beaton (22 off 26) looked to accelerate early with some lusty blows down the ground.

Indian spinners kept the pressure on the Australian batting.

Manan Sharma was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors taking 3-24 from his six overs of left-arm orthodox.

In reply, the tourists got off to a steady start moving to 1-48, before Victorian speedster Jackson Coleman struck twice, snaring the wickets of Avi Barath (13) and Mukul Dagar (31), before finishing with the figures of 2-21..

"From there on, Indian skipper Ashok Menaria led the assault with an unbeaten 63 from 91 deliveries which also earned him the Player of the Match award," said the release.

Coleman could have had an extra number in the wickets column had he not bowled Barath on a free-hit delivery during the 14th over, but the quick was happy with his initial outing.

"I struggled at the start, going for 10 off my first over and I was a bit nervous, but came back and bowled all right," Coleman said.

Although disappointed with the opening loss, Coleman was confident the home side would find the right ingredients ahead of the next match on Thursday.

"Our team fought hard and worked hard all day, but just didn't quite take our chances," the left-arm quick said.

"Half our team got starts but didn't quite go on, but hopefully next game we can put together a few big partnerships and get a win."
