"Cricket thriving in Guernsey"

"Cricket thriving in Guernsey"

espnstar.com's Rajarshi Gupta speaks to Guernsey skipper Stuart Le Prevost to find that cricket is actually a big rage there.

Stuart Le Prevost is an excited man and has a lot on his plate. As captain of Guernsey, who participate in the ICC Cricket 2015 World Cup Qualifiers that begin on Sunday and a grounds man, Prevost sounds pretty relaxed.

You cannot miss the enthusiasm in his voice when he talks about his team's prospects in the upcoming event.

"The boys are looking forward to the tournament. It could be a bit of a lottery really but we as a team are excited and raring to go."

Prevost switches to matters of the ground and pitches when he points out that the climate is good in the country.

"The wickets are not fast. They are wet at the moment and teams should be able to score some runs if they get in."

The Twenty20 format has taken the cricketing world by storm, with the Indian Premier League in South Africa belting out some great matches and the upcoming ICC World Twenty20 in England all set to see the best talents in the world clash for a mega feast. Not unsurprisingly, the format has quiet a few takers in Guernsey.

"T20 is big locally. We play regular 16 and 20 overs cricket regularly and 50-50 every week. So yes, the short format is very popular."

"Cricket is a big thing here in Guernsey, more so after England's Ashes conquest in 2005. The infrastructure is pretty good and thanks to that the game is thriving locally."

Prevost rates Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar and former Australian captain Steve Waugh as his favourites.

"It is good to look at the way he has performed so consistently over the years for India. Whereas Waugh was not the greatest talent in the world but he was gritty and achieved all that he did by dint of sheer hard work."

"I mean Sachin came to England as a 17 year old in 1990 and look at what he has done with the bat."

"Then the boys in the team obviously look up to Andrew Flintoff a lot."

The skipper is grateful for all the help his team has garnered from the Sussex County Club.

"Former Zimbabwe internationalMurray Goodwin has passed on a lot to our team and it has been great working with him."

Prevost pointed out that the team's performance coach would go and watch a few games of the ICC World Twenty20 to take a closer look on how teams prepare.

"The team would be watching on TV and we will try to pick up anything else we can."

After Afghanistan, Guernsey is a team to keep a close watch on out for.

The tournament is the first qualifying event for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and is part of a four-year qualifying structure to even make the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in 2013.

Legendary umpire, Steve Bucknor, will be at the event, mentoring upcoming umpires.
