Asif bid fails

Mohammad Asif has failed to prove he was not deported from the UAE after he was found to be carrying a small quantity of opium.

Pakistan fast bowler, who is at the centre of an inquiry by the Pakistan Cricket Board, was detained in Dubai for 19 days last June when 0.24 grams of a substance was found in his wallet.

Laboratory tests later revealed that substance to be opium.

Asif, who is currently serving a one-year ban for a failed drugs test during the Indian Premier League last year, was eventually released without being charged largely because of the small quantity of the substance.

Asif appeared before a PCB three-member committee, headed by human resources director Wasim Bari, where he was expected to submit proof that he was not deported from the UAE.

But Bari told reporters: "Asif could not substantiate claims that he wasn't deported.

"We will now submit our report to the Board."

Media reports suggest Asif may escape a ban and instead be receive a heavy fine from the PCB.
