Miandad wants Younus to stay
Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad has urged Younus Khan to reconsider his decision to retire from international T20 cricket.
Younus announced his retirement from the shortest format of the game immediately after leading Pakistan to victory in the ICC World Twenty20 in England. But with another edition of the tournament scheduled to be held in the West Indies in less than 10 months, Miandad wants Younus to stay on as captain in all three formats of the game.
"Younus move counterproductive"
"The next T20 World Cup is in April next year and then we have the main World Cup in early 2011, so it would be better if Younus remained captain in all forms of the game," said Miandad, who is also the Pakistan Cricket Board's director general.
"Younus must remain captain to maintain consistency and uniformity in the team."
Younus, who was named skipper of the ICC's team of the tournament, was installed as captain of Pakistan after Shoaib Malik was controversially removed from the job in January.
Miandad, who was appointed director general of the PCB in November last year, was then reportedly unhappy with Malik being stripped of the captaincy and resigned a day after Younus was appointed. Miandad later withdrew his resignation.
But Miandad, a member of the 1992 World Cup winning team, praised Younus' captaincy.
"He has the respect of the players and has got them to perform as a team," Miandad said.
"It is important he stays at the helm so that the team builds on this win."
