Alam trains sights on Sri Lanka

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam has shifted focus to the Sri Lanka tour as they begin the process of building on their T20 triumph.

Pakistan's victory over Sri Lanka in the final at Lord's last weekend dispelled gloom and sparked off wild celebrations across the nation.

But their joy could be short-lived, if Pakistan falter on the tour of Sri Lanka, which begins with the first Test in Galle on July 4.

Alam is quite confident, but he reckons the big test would be a change in mindset.

"The victory has come at the right time," Alam said.

"It has enhanced our image as a sports-loving nation and also lifted the gloom.

"But, Test cricket is an entirely different ball game and Sri Lanka are a very accomplished team. They are even more difficult to beat at home.

"It will require our boys to make a successful transformation from one version of cricket to another.

"In Test cricket, your shot selection has to be very good and you have to be patient and determined to stay at the wicket.

"It requires a complete change in mindset."

Alam was happy with the return of prolific batsman Mohammad Yousuf, who, he said would boost the batting.

Yousuf will be back for Pak

Yousuf return a boon

Yousuf returned to the team after severing ties with the banned Indian Cricket League with whom he had played for a brief period.

"Yousuf's return is good news for our batting," Alam said.

"He is an experienced player and along with Younus Khan, Misbah-ul Haq and Shoaib Malik will add strength to the middle-order.

"We have only two specialist openers in Salman Butt and Khurram Manzoor, but I don't see that as a problem.

"They would need to bat at their best, but it's a question of motivation and confidence building and that can be achieved."

Alam said his priority was to choose the right combination for the matches.

"The weather and playing conditions in Sri Lanka are not easy and we will chalk up a strategy after considering all aspects," Alam said.

"It's important that we field the best combination. Hot weather isn't a problem for us, but humidity is. It could be a huge problem for our fast bowlers."
