"A four-match series is ridiculous"

"A four-match series is ridiculous"

Former Test batsman Sanjay Manjrekar tells Mobile ESPN’s Abhishek Dinman the current series versus Windies is badly planned.

At a time when top cricketers are reeling from injuries, albeit due to an overkill of cricket, the wisdom of staging a four-match one-day series between India and the West Indies in the Caribbean is questionable.

With powerful cricket Boards time and again tampering with the ICC's Future Tour Programme, a schedule that entails thousands of miles of travelling across the globe, for a clutch of ODIs and that too after a world championship begs some introspection.

Do cricket Boards take fatigue, stress and logistics into consideration while planning tours? Does ICC play the role of a watchdog to ensure players do not cross the limit of human endurance to satisfy greedy administrators? Former Test star Sanjay Manjrekar is not quite sure.

"I think it's a slightly ridiculous idea that you travel all the way to the West Indies and just play four one-day internationals, that too immediately after the World T20. I think it must have been a logistical compromise but let us hope we do not have such kind of tours," Manjrekar says.

India already looked tired in T20 WC

Trying to make his point, Manjrekar said: "What happens if it is a two-all scoreline? I also don't see the logic of four ODIs. It should either be five, or three. This is something that ICC should stipulate as early as possible. I don't see a reason why administrators plan a four-match series. The ICC needs to wake up to the problem."

Manjrekar feels that having a 50-over contest at the back of a world T20 is not the greatest of ideas and that the ICC should have been careful when scheduling such events.

It's easy to criticize players, but the sudden switch from 20-20 to 50-50 may also affect viewership.

"I am very interested in seeing how people react to the 50-over game. We always talk about how the players adjust to the shift in format. I think this is going to be a test of the viewers' ability to adjust.

"The reaction of the viewer is critical to the future of 50-50 contests. It thus makes sense to plan events properly," Manjrekar concludes.
