"Gap needed between tournaments"
Dilip Vengsarkar tells SportsCenter’s Sai Prasad Mohapatra that big tournaments need to be scheduled more carefully.
In wake of India's unceremonious exit from the ICC World Twenty20, the former India captain said that high-profile tournaments like Indian Premier League and the T20 WC should be properly planned.
Pointing to India, Vengsarkar said that players were bound to get mentally fatigued by featuring in non-stop cricket.
"Both IPL and T20 World Cup are big tournaments and having them back-to-back affects players and their performance," Vengsarkar said.
"The players are out of their houses and their country for such a long time at stretch. That surely affects them.
"Though the players are professionals and hence expected to perform every time, it will do them a great deal of good if big tournaments are spaced out enough. That will help both players and their teams."
Vengsarkar also suggested increasing the number of participating teams in order to condense the tournaments like IPL and reduce the pressure on the players.
"Rather than having eight teams in the fray, each ending up playing 14 matches on a trot, why not have 10 teams. In that scenario, one side plays nine matches and then go straight for a final," he said.
"That not only reduces the days required to stage the event to around 25, it will also help players. They will be fresh for any international tour that follows after that."
