Younus orders Pakistan to focus

Younus Khan insists there will be no hangover from Pakistan's ICC World T20 triumph when they resume battle against Sri Lanka.

Pakistan play Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle on Saturday.

Pakistan's eight-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the final at Lord's on June 21 sparked massive celebrations at home, but captain Younus has urged his players to put such memories to the back of their minds and focus on the task in hand.

"We have won the World Twenty20, but that's in the past," Younus said.

"It's back to business as usual. Every day is a new day and I believe in the present and the future, not in the past.

"So we have to move on and concentrate on the job at hand and prepare for the future."

Pakistan have unfinished business against Sri Lanka, with their last Test meeting disrupted by gunmen in Lahore four months ago.

The attack on the Sri Lankan team bus only served to further isolate Pakistan from the cricket community.

But Younus is determined to ensure Pakistan remain firmly in the spotlight.

"We have our targets and we would like to do well in the World Cup and the Champions Trophy," he said.

"I want Pakistan to be among the top three cricketing nations in the world."

Younus may not have long to wait to achieve those goals. A series victory over Sri Lanka would catapult them to fourth in the ICC Test rankings, ahead of Sri Lanka and just behind third-placed India.

Younus has urged his team to carry their T20 form into the Test series.

"We need to show the same consistency and the same winning mentality in other forms of the game," he said.

Kumar Sangakkara

"Sri Lanka will be a challenge. In Kumar Sangakkara they have a wise captain and their team is balanced with quality players.

"We will have to be at our best to beat them."

The return of Mohammad Yousuf and Abdul Razzaq has added strength to the Pakistan squad, but they have also given Younus a selection headache.

A line-up of five specialist batsmen would include openers Khurram Manzoor and Salman Butt along with Yousuf, Misbah-ul-Haq and Younus himself in the middle order.

There have been some calls to pick Razzaq at number six so as to have the option of a fifth bowler, but his inclusion would mean former captain Shoaib Malik would have to sit out - unless he opens the batting.

However, Younus believes he is capable of picking the right men.

"We have more match-winners than any other team," he said.

"The challenge is to identify the right personnel. Names do not matter."

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will be without regular wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene due to a finger injury but captain Sangakkara remains confident.

"We have three wicketkeepers in the side in Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kaushal Silva and myself," he said.

"The balance in the side is the important thing."

Sangakkara acknowledges his team will have to adapt quickly to the longer version of the game.

"It is a more of a mental than technical thing and I have every faith that the boys will be able to adjust without too many problems," he said.

Security for the series has been paramount with Sri Lankan officials having demanded stringent protocol measures which could turn off spectators, an already dying breed in Test cricket.

But the 31-year-old is convinced the series will draw crowds.

"We have to play positive and result-oriented cricket for spectators to return to the game," he said.

"But I'm confident we can do it.

"Our batsmen will have to apply pressure on the opposition by occupying the crease for longer periods, while our bowlers will have to operate for longer spells.

"It was disappointing to lose to Pakistan in the final of the World Twenty20, but we had a great tournament and I'm proud of the way the team responded.

"But if you ask any player around the world, they would say Test cricket is the real test.

"I think the players are up for this challenge."
