Bond, Tuffey to make Kiwi returns
Shane Bond and Daryl Tuffey will be back in New Zealand colours after being named in the squads to tour Sri Lanka.
Just weeks after terminating their contracts with the rebel Indian Cricket League, the pair have come full circle with Tuffey named in the 15-man squad for the two Tests and Bond in the 15-man squad for the one-day internationals and Twenty20 matches.
Tuffey returns to the Black Caps on the strength of a strong domestic season which saw him take 27 first-class wickets at an average of 22 - the second highest wicket-taker in the State Championship.
The head of the selection panel, Glenn Turner, said Sri Lankan conditions had also been taken into account in Tuffey's selection.
Auckland wicketkeeper Reece Young receives his first call-up to the national side and will provide cover for Brendon McCullum.
Craig Cumming has secured a place as specialist batting cover for the Test series.
Bond to play in India
Bond will play for New Zealand 'A' in India during August before heading to Sri Lanka for the one-dayers and Twenty20 internationals.
He is one of four specialist limited-overs players who will head to Sri Lanka after the 'A' series in India.
The others are Neil Broom, Nathan McCullum and Kyle Mills, while Ian Butler will also join the Black Caps following the two Tests.
"Many of the squad will be coming off their winter break, so the opportunity to get game time in sub-continent conditions is ideal," said Turner.
"Shane Bond will also have a good opportunity to get up to speed before returning to the Black Caps."
Peter McGlashan comes in as a batsman who can cover as wicketkeeper for the Twenty20 matches and Gareth Hopkins as a cover wicketkeeper/batsman for the ODIs.
The 'A' squad includes one newcomer, Auckland leg-spinner Tarun Nethula.
"He was the top wicket taker in the State Championship last season, and is an interesting prospect," said Turner.
The most notable omission from any of the squads is seamer James Franklin.
Test squad: Daniel Vettori (captain), Craig Cumming, Grant Elliott, Daniel Flynn, Martin Guptill, Chris Martin, Brendon McCullum, Tim McIntosh, Iain O'Brien, Jacob Oram, Jeetan Patel, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Daryl Tuffey, Reece Young.
Twenty20/One-Day International squad: Daniel Vettori (captain), Shane Bond, Neil Broom, Ian Butler, Grant Elliott, Martin Guptill, Gareth Hopkins (ODIs only), Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Peter McGlashan (Twenty20s only), Kyle Mills, Jacob Oram, Jeetan Patel, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor.
'A' squad: Peter Fulton (captain), Brent Arnel, Shane Bond, Neil Broom, Brendon Diamanti, Gareth Hopkins, Jamie How, Peter McGlashan, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Tarun Nethula, Aaron Redmond, Tim Southee, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson.
Turner said all-rounder Franklin had missed out as only three seam bowlers were required in Sri Lankan conditions with Grant Elliott backing up for Jacob Oram."We decided that Grant Elliott can be cover for Jacob Oram because we feel the slow-medium pacers under Sri Lankan conditions for change bowlers are likely to be just as effective," Turner told the Press Association. "We want to see more of Grant from a batting perspective.
"The reason why we haven't got James in the 'A' team is that he's playing for Gloucestershire and he might as well stay and play there as go on an 'A' tour."
The selectors have also left a spot open in the limited overs squad with both Tuffey and Tim Southee, who will go on the Emerging Players trip to Australia and the 'A' series in India, possibilities depending on form in their respective series and the requirements at the time.
Turner however stressed a more cautious approach was being taken with Southee who endured a torrid summer against the West Indies and India.
"We're just conscious we don't want a one step forward two steps back with Tim again. He's still a growing lad. He's still so young really. Patience is the word we would use with him.
"But if it was going well that's a possibility that he's in contention as a bracketed player for that 15th spot."
