Ganguly may not contest elections

The former India skipper Sourav Ganguly is still undecided over contesting Cricket Association of Bengal elections.

Speculation may be rife about Ganguly's plunge into cricket administration but he is still undecided over contesting elections.

The reports had said that Ganguly may contest the elections against his erstwhile 'mentor' Dalmiya, but the just retired Indian ace has dismissed all such reports.

"These are all created stories"

"...this is all speculation. I have not decided anything," Ganguly's told PTI when asked if he wanted to contest the CAB elections.

Ganguly had expressed his desire to get into the administration leading to speculations of him eyeing the BCCI Chief's post in 2014.

Expressing his "disappointment" about the whole episode, he said, "I just had said a simple thing that I want to come into administration'. There have been statements everyday."

"These are all created stories, there is no truth about this. These are all stories. I have not entered into administration yet and people are thinking of 2014. It's not about fighting elections. It's about trying to help the game. I want to be at a place from where I can help the game."

Ganguly's brother explains

Ganguly's brother Snehashis had also said that Sourav's chances of contesting elections was unlikely this year.

"Maybe the time is not opportune yet. But there's a strong possibility that he will throw his hat in the ring next year," he had said.

Sources in the Dalmiya opposition camp claimed that Ganguly did not have the required numbers to challenge the strong Dalmiya.

"Unless he is pretty sure of getting the numbers right in the 121 members body, he would not come into the picture," said a source.

Ganguly to run for BCCI presidency?

CAB joint-secretary Biswarup Dey however said they were pretty "comfortable" this time.

"The opposition is not yet clear. Probably they are yet to find somebody. In case of no opposition, there will be no elections and the same body will continue," Dey said.

There have been lot of names doing rounds to oppose Dalmiya including former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and Union minister of State for Tourism Sultan Ahmed.

The former BCCI supremo Dalmiya has a straight record at the CAB having held the top post since 1993 except for a 19-month break from end December 2006 to the middle of last year.

Dalmiya had stepped down from the CAB top post towards 2006 end after a ban by the Sharad Pawar-led BCCI.

However, he returned to power in 2008 by defeating then president Prasun Mukherjee.

The CAB working committee meeting on Saturday will finalise the dates of filing of the nomination papers and the elections that is likely to be held on July 29 or 30.
