Butt to confront players

PCB Chairman Ejaz Butt will individually talk to players on reports of discord within the team.

It was also reported that some players were not cooperating with captain Younis Khan in Sri Lanka.

A PCB official said that Butt will meet with the players in Karachi and Lahore on August 14 and 15 besides asking the captain, coach and manager of the team to file separate reports on the Test and one-day debacles in the island nations.

"The Chairman wants to have a look at what the captain, coach and manager think were the reasons for the team's poor performance in Sri Lanka. Plus he is also keen to have a one to one talk with the players," said the official.

"He also wants to find out whether it is true that Younis has been running a one-man show in the team and not encouraging collective decisions," a source said.

Not only the Pakistan team but even Butt has come under fire after the disappointing show in the Test and one-day series which Pakistan lost for the first time in Sri Lanka.

Younis Khan

"With an important tournament like the Champions Trophy coming up the Chairman is concerned and does not want a repeat in the main event," the source said.

Publicly, the Board chief has tried to play down the defeats and dismissed reports off discord within the team but other sources said Butt wanting the team management to file separate reports indicated he wanted to set things right.

"Maybe we could see a change in the team management for the Champions Trophy and a new coach and manager," one source said."

Younis has denied that he was behaving like a dictator in the team, insisting he encouraged players to participate in all important decisions.

There is a feeling that the stories about Younis behaving like a dictator or running a one-man show has been inspired by a particular group which is keen to ensure that the coach and manager are not sacked after returning home and are trying to put all the blame for the poor performances on Younis.

Saleem Altaf, the chief operating officer of the Board said, the Chairman has also agreed to convene a General Council meeting on August 13 in Karachi at which the team's performance can be discussed.

"Primarily the council is meeting to sort out the 2011 World Cup matters but if members want to discuss the performance in Sri Lanka they can do so," Altaf said.
