PCB may appoint Latif as assistant coach

The PCB may appoint Rashid Latif as assistant coach, keeping in mind Younis Khan's demand of a young support staff.

Former batting legend Javed Miandad has already been appointed as a batting consultant for the Champions trophy starting September 22.

"The Board wants to give a strong support team to captain Younis Khan, who has conveyed to the Chairman that Pakistan need to have a strong support staff like other countries if it is to perform well consistently," a PCB source said.

Latif, who is supervising an emerging players camp in Karachi, has shown interest in the job as he and Younis share a very close relationship, the source added.

"If Latif does accept the board offer, it will be because he is a big supporter of Younis and wants to see him succeed as a captain," the source said.

According to other sources, Younis had emphasised on the need to have a professional and young support staff when he met the Board chairman.

"Younis made it clear that he wanted to concentrate on his own batting and tactical issues instead on planning the team's training schedule and dealing with other issues," a source said.

Pakistan had a disappointing tour of Sri Lanka recently losing both ODI and Test series, and chief coach Intikhab Alam, bowling coach Aaqib Javed and manager Yawar Saeed were flayed for failing to motivate the players.

The retention of Intikhab (67) and Yawar (72) was also criticised by former players citing their old age and demanded appointment of younger people as the support staff.

Butt, in his explanation, had said that Intikhab has a two-year contract with the Board and cannot be removed.

The critics though pointed out that Australian Geoff Lawson also had a similar contract with the Board and was released before its completion.
