Regan predicts a warm welcome

Yorkshire chief executive Stewart Regan believes Headingley Carnegie could become a "home from home" for the Pakistan team.

Headingley will stage one of two Tests between Pakistan and Australia next summer, with July 21 the provisional date.

Lord's will host the other Test, while Edgbaston will be the venue for two Twenty20 internationals between the sides.

"The Asian community will welcome Pakistan"

Pakistan cannot currently host international cricket as the security situation there prevents other countries from touring.

But Regan feels the welcome the team will receive in Yorkshire will make the fixture as close to a home match as it is possible to get - and is hopeful of getting the chance to stage further Pakistan Tests.

"We can make Pakistan feel as if this is home from home," he said. "The welcome that they will get here will be phenomenal. The Asian community will welcome them with open arms.

"If we deliver it and we get it right, we have a full house and everyone has a great time, on the basis that Pakistan can't play any home Test matches for a period we believe of around five years, then we would certainly be in pole position to look at bringing future events back to this stadium."

Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe added: "It's sad that Pakistan can't play their games at home in Pakistan and that the Test matches have to be transferred.

"But where better than Yorkshire with our wealth of community from Pakistan and Kashmir - who are all cricket lovers?"

This will the first time in 98 years that England has hosted a neutral Test.

In 1912, Australia played three Tests against South Africa at Old Trafford, Lord's and Trent Bridge in a triangular tournament also involving England.

"I don't want to go over history"

And Regan feels July's game could be worth more than £1million to Yorkshire.

He said: "If we have a full house - and I'm confident that we can fill the ground - then the match could be worth a sizeable six-figure sum, possible tipping over into a seven-figure sum if everything comes together for us."

The chief executive is also confident the club have taken the necessary security precautions.

"The staging of the match involves a number of criteria of which security is a key one, given events in Lahore," Regan said.

"We've got a number of learnings from this year, particularly from Trent Bridge, The Oval and Lord's because of the staging of the World Twenty20 championships and we'll be working with the same safety team and security operators."

Pakistan triumphed in that tournament earlier this summer and Regan feels July's Test will provide Yorkshire with a chance to further strengthen links with the Asian community.

He said: "I think this presents us with a real life-changing opportunity to get the Asian community involved with this club.

"I don't want to go over history, but we will know that years ago the club was accused of - I suppose you might call it institutional racism, and not engaging with the Asian community. This is our chance to build on the fantastic work we've done in recent years."
