Buchanan for multiple coaches now

After advocating multiple captaincy theory, John Buchanan's now believes that a team should have coaches on rotational basis.

"Let me say that the game is in transition, principally due to the advent of T20 cricket and the IPL. Due to the significant and far-reaching changes, these two formats of the game will have, the coaching as we know it today should also be affected by change," Buchanan said.

He further added that because of the different formats of the game being played today like Tests, ODIs and T20s, the team composition and captains are changed more often. A single coach finds it difficult to cope with such changes and has to alter his tactics as per the demands of the different formats of the game.

Buchanan's successor, Tim Nielsen, went on a "short vacation" following his team's defeat in the recently-concluded Ashes series. During the first instance of its kind, Nielsen's deputy and bowling coach Troy Cooley took interim charge of the team.

Put in charge of a team that was used to being led by example, Buchanan approached his job with a whole new perspective, and, crucially, the approval of his captain, Steve Waugh, who was a keen student of the game. Buchanan believed his role was to expand the horizons of his team by developing the individuals within - and not just in a cricket sense.

"If cricket administrators around the world are not prepared to be open to the multiple coach theory, then important opportunities will be lost for the growth and development of the game, including the changing roles of coaches", Buchanan said.
