PCB wants referral system in ODIs

The Pakistan Cricket Board wants the ICC to start using the umpire referral system in one-dayers to cut down on the errors.

Miffed with the umpiring in the ICC Champions Trophy, the Pakistan Cricket Board gave this suggestion.

PCB sources said Board Chairman Ejaz Butt discussed this with representatives of other boards on the sidelines of the ICC executive board meeting in Johannesburg this week.

"Pakistan believes that there is nothing wrong with testing the umpires referral system in one-day internationals also, despite the issue of time involved in implementing the system," one source said.

The ICC has already successfully tested the referral system in Test matches.

Pakistan was unhappy with the umpiring standards in the Champions Trophy semifinal against New Zealand.

Due to the strict code of conduct, board officials and players avoided making any public comments on the umpiring in the semifinal but the source said the team management was told to submit their reservations in writing to the ICC.

The team management, under ICC regulations, can express any reservations over the umpiring in any match in their match report sent to the ICC.

"There is the aspect of time being taken up if the teams ask for a referral to the third umpire. But Pakistan believes this is something that can be sorted out if the issue is discussed in detail at the ICC level among board members," the source added.
