Vettori can cope without coach
Martin Crowe believes New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori should be running the team with the support of a strong manager.
The former New Zealand skipper has aired his views as coach Andy Moles is fighting for his Black Caps future following revelations senior players expressed doubts about his abilities during a regular review following the recent trip to Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy in South Africa.
Moles and New Zealand Cricket are currently in mediation but it is difficult to see how the Englishman can remain in his position following the vote of no-confidence.
Further complicating the situation is the fact that the New Zealanders leave on Tuesday for a limited-overs series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.
Crowe, however, believes the players under Vettori's leadership do not need a national coach, although they should all have someone they can turn to when they require technical expertise.
Crowe said: "When your captain is not strong or is young you need a coach. But Daniel Vettori is exceptional, just like Stephen Fleming was before him.
"Dan and his team need to be given room to be accountable to themselves and they don't need coaches that just get in the way.
"This is Dan's team. He needs to be given room to run things. No coach, no vice-captain."
Vettori already has a heavy workload as captain and the team's go-to man with ball and bat.
He also recently joined the panel of selectors but Crowe felt the 30-year-old would cope with an increased workload.
He told The Dominion Post: "He's stated he only sees himself captaining for three or four years. He's a resilient guy. He doesn't need anyone except for a very good manager.
"The New Zealand team would be a potentially very good one if they were all out there working it out for themselves.
"They should all have one-on-one coaches who they work with back in New Zealand and they can call on in times of need. If the team is overseas it can be done over the phone and online."
