Player Ratings: India vs Australia
The players' performances in the second one-dayer between India and Australia in Nagpur.
INDIA:
Mahendra Singh Dhoni - 9
Dhoni completed his century in only 94 balls, studded with two sixes and seven fours.
Dhoni, who came to the crease when India were 97 for three in the 16th over, first consolidated the home team innings with Gautam Gambhir (76 in 80 balls) by running the singles and twos well and then opened up in the slog overs in the company of another left hander Suresh Raina (62 off 50 balls).
Gautam Gambhir - 8
Gambhir scored a fabulous 76 and helped lay a solid platform, with a stand of 119 runs with Dhoni for the fourth wicket in only 113 balls. He faced 80 balls and hit six fours before he got run-out at non-striker's end.
Gambhir matched his captain all the way, but was eventually run out, a direct hit from Nathan Hauritz catching him well short of the safety of the crease at the non-striker's end after he was sent back by Dhoni.
Suresh Raina - 8
Suresh Raina hit a quickfire half-century and along with Dhoni utilised the batting Power Play, taken between 40th and 44th overs, to add 39 runs. He raised his half-century off just 42 deliveries. He and Dhoni accelerated nicely at the death.
Virender Sehwag - 7
India began their innings in spectacular style with Virender Sehwag taking a fancy for the swing bowling of Tasmanian Ben Hilfenhaus. Before getting out he made a quick-fire 40 off only 31 balls.
Praveen Kumar - 8
Defending a massive total, pacer Praveen Kumar came up with an impressive spell of two for 37. Praveen claimed two early breakthroughs. He provided India with the first breakthrough, sending Tim Paine's off stump cartwheeling with a delivery that nipped back off the seam.
Ishant Sharma - 8
Ishant Sharma's two for 34 in eight overs was impressive. He, bowling first change, struck with his first delivery, inducing an edge from Shane Watson which Tendulkar snapped up neatly at first slip.
Ashish Nehra - 6
Like other bowlers, Ashish Nehra also did his job well (7-0-40-1) but he remained in the background as Praveen Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja took the centrestage.
Yuvraj Singh - 5
Yuvraj Singh, playing his first competitive match since a finger injury forced him out of India's Champions Trophy opener against Pakistan in South Africa, looked in ominous form but departed quickly.
Yuvraj, who came in for Sehwag, showed no signs of playing his first match since mid-September, and timed the ball beautifully in making a quickfire 23 with two fours and a six before being brilliantly caught and bowled by Hilfenhaus when he could not keep down a straight drive.
Ravindra Jadeja - 5
The all-rounder did not get a turn to bat. But Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of Indian bowlers with figures of three for 35. He nipped in bud any chances of an Australian middle order fight back.
Harbhajan Singh - 3
When Michael Hussey and Cameron White had briefly steadied the innings with a 48-run stand for the fourth wicket, it was Harbhajan Singh, who broke that association by getting rid of White.
Sachin Tendulkar - 0
He had a low key game. Tendulkar, who needed 83 runs at the start of this match to reach the 17, 000-run milestone in ODIs, managed only four when he edged Siddle to Cameron White at first slip.
AUSTRALIA:
Michael Hussey - 7
The lone batsman in Michael Hussey top-scored with a 60-ball 53 as he tried in vain, chasing a stiff target of 355. He shared a 47-run stand for the fifth wicket with Adam Voges (36) also.
Mitchell Johnson - 6
Mitchell Johnson took three wickets but he gave away 75 runs in 10 overs. He, along with the other Aussie bowlers felt the full fury of Indian batsmen's blade. Johnson shone with the bat though, scoring a fine 21 off 26 balls.
Adam Voges - 5
Adam Voges tried to consolidate the innings with Michael Hussey by giving him good support at the other end but he could not sustain for long.
Peter Siddle - 5
Peter Siddle was the pick of the bowlers with his pace and effective use of the short ball in his earlier spell before he too was carted around by Dhoni and Raina.
Shaun Marsh - 3
Marsh flopped on his return to international cricket and scored only 21 runs but it was obviously not enough.
Nathan Hauritz - 3
As was the case with the other Aussie bowlers, Nathan Hauritz also failed to sustain the Indian batsmen and ended up conceding 54 runs in overs without any success at all. However, he batted well, remaining unbeaten on 30 off 44 balls.
Cameron White - 2
It was never easy to chase a target of 355 and Cameron White never looked in contention as he hit 23 in 42 balls before getting out.
Shane Watson - 2
Watson simply failed to make any mark, opening the innings. The fire was missing completely.
Ricky Ponting - 1
Ponting made sloppy 12 runs during his stay at the wicket.
Tim Paine - 1
Tim Paine had a poor game. Period.
Ben Hilfenhaus - 0
Ben Hilfenhaus proved to be the costliest bowler, giving away 83 runs in his allotted 10 overs with just one wicket against his name.
