Pakistan kept in check on day two
Pakistan failed to capitalise on their solid start as they were bowled out for 286 on day two of the three-day warm-up match against a New Zealand Invitational XI.
Resuming on 14 for one at the Queenstown Events Centre in reply to the New Zealanders' 234, Pakistan had reached 120 for two at lunch as overnight batsmen Imran Farhat and Fawad Alam made half-centuries.
But they lost wickets at regular intervals during the middle session to be 211 for six by tea and were eventually dismissed for 286 - a lead of just 52 runs.
When bad light ended play New Zealand were 17 for one after opener Craig Cumming (16) was caught by Sarfraz Ahmed off the bowling of Abdur Rauf.
Tim McIntosh will start the final day on seven, while Daniel Flynn has yet to score.
Pakistan made slow but steady progress in the morning session as Farhat, who started the day on 10, and Alam, who had yet to score when play began, worked their way towards half-centuries.
Opener Farhat was the first to bring up his 50, which took 92 balls and included seven boundaries.
Alam followed suit - his half-ton taking 73 balls - before Farhat was caught by Cumming from the bowling of Brent Arnel for 52 as lunch loomed.
But New Zealand struck back immediately after the interval when Iain O'Brien had Salman Butt (11) caught by Tim Southee.
Mohammad Yousuf (21) fell after the drinks break to leave Pakistan on 163 for four before Tarun Nethula struck twice in quick succession.
The leg-spinner dismissed Alam, who top-scored with a 145-ball 77, caught and bowled and then in his next over removed Umar Akmal (21) in identical circumstances as he finished with figures of two for 61 off his eight overs.
Faisal Iqbal and Sarfraz resumed after tea on four and 11 respectively but Iqbal's stay at the crease was short-lived as he was run out by O'Brien having added just one run to his total. Two overs later Yasir Arafat (three) was caught by Cumming off the bowling of Daryl Tuffey leaving Pakistan on 224 for eight and still trailing New Zealand's total by eight runs.
But Rauf (26) and Sarfraz (37), who hit five fours in his 41-ball stay, and Danish Kaneria (18 not out) put up some resistance to push Pakistan beyond the 250 mark.
Tuffey took two for 47 off 19 overs, while Southee added to the wicket of Khurram Manzoor he took on Wednesday evening to finish with two for 67 off 16.
O'Brien added to his run-out with two wickets for 55 runs off 14.3 overs.
