Mahela smashes another record

Mahela Jayawardene, during the course of his 275 against India at Sardar Patel Stadium, established numerous records.

- Highest individual innings by a visiting batsman on Indian soil, bettering Younis Khan's 267 for Pakistan at Bangalore in March 2005. Only two Indians have recorded more runs in an innings on Indian soil than Jayawardene - 319 by Virender Sehwag against South Africa at Chennai in March 2008 and VVS Laxman's 281 against Australia at Kolkata in March 2001.
 
- First Sri Lankan and the third batsman ever to register two innings of 200-plus against India, joining Pakistan's Zaheer Abbas and Australia's Ricky Ponting.
 
- With six double hundreds, he now shares a record for the most double hundreds for Sri Lanka with Marvan Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara

- With five hundreds against India, he has equalled Aravinda de Silva's tally, sharing a Sri Lankan record for the most hundreds (5) against India.

- Extended his Sri Lankan record for most hundreds (27) in Tests. In Test cricket, he shares his tally of centuries with Allan Border and Rahul Dravid and only eight players have recorded more hundreds than Jayawardene - Sachin Tendulkar (42), Ricky Ponting (38), Sunil Gavaskar (34), Brian Lara (34), Steve Waugh (32), Jacques Kallis (31), Matthew Hayden (30) and Don Bradman (29).

- First Sri Lankan and the ninth batsman to register 9,000 runs - 9022 at an average of 54.67 in 108 Tests. 
 
- Leading run-getter in India-Sri Lanka Tests, overtaking Sachin Tendulkar's run-aggregate of 1412 (ave.54.30) in 20 Tests. Jayawardene now has 1436 runs to his credit at an average of 79.77 in 13 Tests against India.
 
- Jayawardene's brilliant knock is now his highest away from home, obliterating the 240 against Pakistan at Karachi in February this year.

- His innings of 275 is now his second highest score in Tests, next only to his 374 against South Africa at Colombo, SSC in July 2006, which is also the highest individual innings for Sri Lanka in Tests.
 
- Jayawardene's career-best innings is the highest by a right-hander in Tests as well as the highest by any batsman against South Africa.
 
- Jayawardene (1096 at 73.06 in nine Tests) became the second Sri Lankan and the third batsman this year to complete 1,000 runs, joining Thilan Samaraweera (1153) and England's Andrew Strauss (1025)
 
- Jayawardene is the only player in the world to share world records for three separate partnerships - 624 for the third wicket with Kumar Sangakkara against South Africa at Colombo SSC in July 2006; 437 for the fourth wicket with Thilan Samaraweera against Pakistan at Karachi in February 2009 and 351 for the sixth wicket with Prasanna Jayawardene against India at Ahmedabad in November 2009. 
 
- With his marathon innings, Jayawardene ensured the first total of 700-plus against India in India.
