Tim McIntosh shines in Pakistan draw

Tim McIntosh hit a timely century as the warm-up match between a New Zealand Invitational XI and Pakistan ended in a draw.

The left-handed opener was unbeaten on 131 with Grant Elliott 22 not out when the two teams called it a day at afternoon drinks on the third and final day at the Queenstown Events Centre.

With the opening Test of the three-match series between Pakistan and New Zealand beginning in Dunedin on Tuesday McIntosh got some valuable time in the middle and made full use of it.

He posted his half-century in 100 balls before lunch, then after the break he took just another 67 deliveries to reach his century which included 14 boundaries.

Daniel Flynn, the New Zealand Test incumbent number three, also posted a useful half-century to add to his 49 from the first innings.

He was three runs shy of his fifty at lunch but could add only nine more runs after the break before being caught by Sarfraz Ahmed from the bowling Fawad Alam.

It was the only wicket to fall on the final day as the Invitation side finished on 231 for two in their second innings after Pakistan made 286 on day two in reply to the New Zealanders' first innings of 234.

The New Zealand XI had resumed on 24 for one following Craig Cummings' departure for 16 the previous day and McIntosh and Flynn were quickly into their work and by lunch the Invitation side were 122 for one.

With little prospect of forcing a result Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf used four part-time bowlers in a bid to unsettle the New Zealand pair.

But it was all-rounder Fawad Alam, who top-scored with 77 for Pakistan on the second day, who got the breakthrough.

He finished with one for 46 off 12 overs, while Abdur Rauf had one for 11 off six.

Leg-spinner Danish Kaneria was the busiest bowler, delivering 22 unrewarded overs for 52.

Fast bowler Mohammad Asif, who is hoping to force his way back into the Pakistan Test side after a break of over two years, sent down 11 overs for 35 runs.
