Gambhir notches up unique record

With a hundred each at Napier, Wellington and Ahmedabad, Gautam Gambhhir accomplished another feat in his glittering Test career.

By Rajesh Kumar

Gambhir is now the sixth Indian batsman to have recorded three centuries or more in successive Tests, joining Sunil Gavaskar (four between 1976-77 and 1977-78 & three during 1970-71), Rahul Dravid (four between 2002 and 2002-03), Vijay Hazare (three between 1948-49 and 1951-52), Polly Umrigar (three between 1960-61 and 1961-62) and Mohammad Azharuddin (three during 1984-85 and 3 between 1989-90 and 1990).

Gambhir, thanks to his 114 off 230 balls, took his run tally in 2009 to 560 at an average of 80.00 in four matches - the best by an Indian player this year so far, bettering Rahul Dravid's run-aggregate of 529 (ave.75.87) in four Tests.

Gambhir's seventh Test hundred is his first against Sri Lanka. Of his seven hundreds, four have been recorded by him in India and three away from home. India have not lost a single Test match when he recorded a Test hundred.
