Sports Ministry blasts PCB chief Butt

PCB Chairman Ejaz Butt came under severe criticism from all quarters for arbitrarily running the day to day affairs of the board.

Butt was also under fire for overlooking the alleged financial discrepancies committed by his appointed people.

A sub committee of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports has criticised the board for working in an arbitrary fashion and lambasted Butt for taking unilateral decisions without following the laid rules and regulations.

Federal sports minister Aftab Shah Jillani has also sent a comprehensive report to President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also the chief patron of the board, about the serious mismanagement taking place in the PCB.

The sub-committee, during its two-day long meetings with PCB officials at the Lahore national cricket academy expressed surprise that Butt had appointed his own relative, Muhammad Naeem as the financial advisor in the board.

The committee pointed out several irregularities in the way financial and administrative affairs of the board were being run.

The committee, in strong words, has told Butt to ensure Naeem's presence before the committee today to respond to the queries about the financial affairs of the board since Butt took charge in October, 2008.

The committee also took serious note of the fact that the figures being quoted by Butt and other officials on the total assets of the PCB differentiate.

Butt had earlier told the committee that the total assets of the board amounted to four billion but a member reminded him that the figure was quoted differently.

Meanwhile, Sports minister Jillani said to have sent a report to President Zardari on the affairs of the board as he was not satisfied with the way the present set-up was managing important issues and routine affairs.

Jillani has also attached the findings of the auditor-general of Pakistan on the accounts of the board in his report.

"The job of the ministry is to keep the President informed about all the happenings in the board and he is at will to take a decision on the board affairs. We can't force him to do anything," Jillani said.

The NA sub-committee has also directed the PCB to finalise the new constitution of the board by January 31st, 2010.
