The PCB spent around Rs 10 million in its efforts to get senior batsman and current captain Muhammad Yousuf back into the national fold.

According to the documents made available to the Auditor-General of Pakistan, who carried out an audit of the PCB accounts for the period 2002 and late 2008, a total sum of Rs 9,620,538 was spent on regaining Yousuf for the Pakistan team after he had joined the 'rebel' Indian Cricket League (ICL).

The AG's report on the PCB accounts noted that besides paying a 'loyalty bonus' of USD 100,000 which came to Rs 6,050,000 according to the prevailing exchange rates in late 2007, the PCB also paid Rs 2,272,000 to the rebel ICL as legal compensation costs.

Yousuf had signed a contract with the ICL in September 2007, which according to him was a decision taken out of frustration after being mistreated by the national selectors who dropped him for the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup in September.

Dr Nasim Ashraf, then PCB Chairman, had tried to convince Yousuf to back out of his ICL contract by luring him with the loyalty bonus and assurance that the board would foot the legal expenses for any wrangle with the ICL.

The AG's office has told the board to recover the money spent on the legal costs incurred for getting Yousuf released from the ICL which in total amounts to around Rs 3.2 million.

It was also stated in its report that the board had violated its own rules and regulations by fighting the case for Yousuf and giving him a loyalty bonus as the senior player in the first instance had violated terms of the central contract he had signed with the PCB.

The report also said that Yousuf had breached several sections of his central contract which barred him from playing in any other tournament not approved by the PCB.

Interestingly, Yousuf did join the ICL again in November 2008, claiming he was upset with the treatment meted out to him by the selectors and captain Shoaib Malik and resigned from the ICL again in June this year to be pardoned by the PCB.

He was picked to play for the national team for Sri Lanka tour same month. Yousuf later clarified that he was left with no option but to join the ICL due to the bad treatment he got from Malik and team officials.

Ironically, Yousuf is captain of the team at present in New Zealand with Malik as a senior member of the side.

The AG's office has also advised the PCB that in the case of Muhammad Asif, the board should recover legal costs of around Rs nine million from him as he had also violated central contract when was detained in Dubai for possession of banned drug last year in June.
