Donald urges Sreesanth to push on
Allan Donald believes his stern handling of India fast bowler Sreesanth during his six-week stint with English county side Warwickshire has worked.
Sreesanth, playing his first Test since April last year, scripted a fairytale comeback by claiming five for 75 in the first innings to help India secure an innings-and-144-run victory over Sri Lanka in the second Test at Kanpur.
Sreesanth, who was named man of the match for his six-wicket haul in the match, has attributed his success to his stint with Donald.
Donald, a coach at Warwickshire, reckons Sreesanth is now capable of leading India's attack.
"We recruited Sreesanth at Warwickshire because of what he is," Donald told DNA newspaper. "We were looking for a guy with some kind of attitude.
"We wanted him for his aggression and his skills and he fitted our bill.
"He proved us right in England and he proved us right again on a flat pitch in Kanpur.
"Now that he is back in the side with a bang, I don't see why he can't lead this Indian attack.
"His strengths are his ability to swing the ball both ways when it is new and he can reverse the ball both ways when it is old. He is a fit guy and runs the whole day.
"The problem with him is that he gets carried away and lets his emotions get the better of him.
"I can't say I'm in any way responsible for his success but all I can say is that we had good six weeks in England during which we talked about a lot of things.
"I was very frank with him on certain issues and it was comforting to see him responding to those.
"Hammering down those points for six weeks, I think, has worked and hopefully he pushes on."
Sreesanth said the key was to get the length right.
"The strategy was to hit the right length, target the base of off stump and to keep it simple," Sreesanth said.
"The ball was superbly maintained by Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh and I was lucky to get the seam position right.
"That's probably what helped me get those wickets on a flat track like this.
"Donald put my bowling back on track.
"It is not easy to bowl in July, August in English conditions and Donald helped me a lot.
"There was so much to learn from him."
