Injured Bond ruled out of Test series
Shane Bond has been ruled out of New Zealand's final two Tests against Pakistan after suffering an abdominal tear.
The 34-year-old fast bowler felt some minor discomfort during the first Test in Dunedin and had an ultrasound scan on Tuesday which revealed a one centimetre tear in an abdominal muscle.
Bond, who took man of the match honours for his eight wickets for 153 runs in the 32-run win in Dunedin, said: "It's frustrating. It's not what I expected.
"This (the scan) was just a precaution because I'd had an injury in the same region in the past.
"There was a little bit of a niggle there during the game but by the last session there was nothing.
"This was just to make sure everything was good and I got a bit of a shock when they said there was a bit of a tear there."
The series opener at University Oval was Bond's first Test in more than two years after injury and a spell in the rebel Indian Cricket League kept him out of international cricket.
The same injury forced him out of his previous Test against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2007.
"I did a whole lot of rehab from there and it's been fine for two years. It's like any area that's been damaged before you always get aches and pains.
"I thought this was no different and that it was just tired through bowling a lot."
Bond got through 48.5 overs in Dunedin as New Zealand went into the Test with just four bowlers and the paceman admitted that had probably contributed towards his demise.
He continued: "But that's the nature of cricket. That's just what happens."
The fast bowler, who has battled injury constantly throughout his eight year international career, will now head home to Christchurch to contemplate his future.
"I'm a positive person but I'm also a realist. I will just sit down and think about what it is I want to do," he said.
"I don't like doing this. I feel like it lets the team down. I'm sure the team find it a pain in the backside to have someone coming in and out all the time.
"I'll just have to take some time out and see what we do.
"I was really looking forward to the last two Test matches. It'll be a great series and to go home and have to watch it on TV is a real pain in the backside."
New Zealand have yet to decide who to bring in as a replacement but Tim Southee, who took eight for 27 for Northern Districts in a recent domestic four-day game against Wellington, appears the most likely candidate.
The second Test in Wellington is scheduled to begin on Thursday at the Basin Reserve.
