Vettori acknowledge Bond blow

Daniel Vettori acknowledged the absence of Shane Bond will be a blow for his team in the second Test against Pakistan at Wellington.

The 34-year-old pace bowler has been ruled out of the remaining two matches of the series against Pakistan because of an abdominal tear.

Bond suffered discomfort after his man-of-the-match display in the 32-run win in the series opener in Dunedin and an ultrasound confirmed the worst.

Black Caps skipper Vettori admitted today: "It's sad for Shane - he's been in the squad for a while now and we've grown accustomed to having him around.

"His performance in the first Test was outstanding. To lose him is a big blow...I don't think anyone's under any illusions, it's a loss.

"The problem with Shane is he wants to play all the time and bowl all time. It's hard to douse those competitive flames.

"He's such a great cricketer you want him to play all the time but hopefully he'll be back for the Bangladesh series.

"He played a huge role in the first Test - however the series goes we're indebted to him for his performance in the first Test."

Bond's injury means Daryl Tuffey appears well placed to make his first Test start in five years.

Vettori continued at a press conference: "It (Bond's injury) gives someone else a chance on a wicket which may offer a seamer a bit of assistance.

"Shane needs to be replaced and Daryl will probably be the first cab off the rank in that respect - but we need to see how the wicket has been prepared.

"Every team named, Daryl has been disappointed not to be in it. He's ready to go and will be excited if he gets the chance tomorrow."

Wet weather has hampered preparations for the match, with both teams forced to prepare for the match indoors.

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam said: "We haven't been able to see the wicket so far - it's all covered.

"I came here especially this morning to see it but it was drizzling so it's not been ideal preparation for the Test.

"You don't really enjoy practising indoors but something is better than nothing. I hope the weather will clear.

"The forecast isn't too bad but I have my doubts, although I hope we have a clear five days."

The 67-year-old is hoping his team make more of an impression with the bat and in the field after the disappointment of Dunedin.

He continued: "The bowlers did a fine job but the batting let us down. And if we take our catches then I think we have a very good chance."

The Pakistan coach acknowledged Bond's injury does not improve New Zealand's chances of getting the win they need which would wrap up the series.

He explained: "It's bad luck for New Zealand. They will miss him dearly. There's no doubt he's been a matchwinner and proved it again and again.

"I feel sorry for him, you never like to see a fellow cricketer get injured.

"With fast bowlers, the speed they bowl at, they are never 100% fit - they will have a niggle here and there."

He added: "It's going to be a very, very crucial Test match...in the past the team have done well when we've come to New Zealand - we always enjoy coming here."
