MS Dhoni leading from the front

For the first time in his Test career, MS Dhoni has registered two centuries in a Test series.

By Rajesh Kumar

In the first Test of the series in Ahmedabad, he made 110. Dhoni's 100 not out in Mumbai is his third century.

Dhoni has been in splendid form, making four fifty-plus in his last five innings - 52 and 56 not out against New Zealand at Wellington in 2008-09, 110 against Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad, 4 at Kanpur and 100 not out at Mumbai.

India's total of 726 for nine wickets declared is the highest by any team at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, eclipsing the 629 for six wickets declared by West Indies against India in 1948-49.

In India's innings, six batsmen have recorded fifty or more - Vijay (87), Sehwag (293), Dravid (74), Tendulkar (53), Laxman (62) and Dhoni (100 not out) - a feat achieved by India for the fifth time in Tests, the earlier instances being vs. New Zealand at Kanpur in 1976-77; vs. Australia at Kolkata in 1997-98; vs. England at the Oval in 2007 and vs. Pakistan at Kolkata in 2007-08.

India, with 642 at Kanpur and 726 for nine wickets declared, for the third time in their Test history, have recorded 600 or more in an innings in successive Tests.

Dhoni is averaging 60 against Sri Lanka - 363 in eight innings at an average of 60.50.

Dhoni, as captain, is averaging 68.54 - 754 in 14 innings, including two hundreds and seven fifties, in ten Tests.

Dhoni, with his hundred at Brabourne Stadium, has become the first Indian wicketkeper to post three centuries. Farokh Engineer, Budhi Kunderan and Syed Kirmani had made two hundreds each.

Thanks to his unbeaten hundred, Dhoni now averages 40.29 - 2176 in 40 Tests, including three hundreds and 16 fifties.

Dhoni is the ninth Indian to complete a hundred with a six, joining Polly Umrigar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar (four times), Mohammad Azharuddin, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Irfan Pathan and Gautam Gambhir.
