Ranji Trophy - Brief Previews

Here are brief previews of the Ranji Trophy matches to be played in various parts of the country.

Resurgent Delhi take on struggling Maharashtra

A quarter-final place at stake, a resurgent Delhi will take on group laggards Maharashtra in their last Ranji Trophy Super League Group B encounter in the Capital.

Under new skipper Virat Kohli, Delhi defeated Saurashtra to revive their campaign and the hosts will look to continue the good work against Maharashtra, who have lost two of their four matches so far.

Delhi have nine points from four outings, having lost one, won one and drawn two matches so far.

Although regular captain Aakash Chopra has returned to the squad after getting married, Kohli has been retained as skipper.

The left-hander is in red-hot form and has scored a century and a fifty in three innings he has played so far.

Delhi boast of a strong middle order with Rajat Bhatia, Gaurav Chhabra and Puneet Bisht in their ranks and a lot would depend on these players' performance in the match.

Almost all the teams have scored big against Maharashtra and Delhi's strong batting line-up is also expected to milk their bowling around.

Paceman Samad Fallah and left-arm spinner K Adhav are the only real threats for the hosts.

For Delhi, paceman Sunit Narwal initially did very well but in the last two matches has not got any wickets. He has to provide the early breakthrough for Delhi to do well.

Maharashtra's batting has been unpredictable and inconsistent. But if they play to their potential, they can spoil Delhi's chances.

Mumbai face TN in crucial sixth round encounter

Having let the opposition off the hook in their last two matches, hosts Mumbai will have a tough task in hand when they take on group toppers Tamil Nadu, sans two of its key players, in a crucial sixth round Elite division Group A Ranji Trophy encounter.

The hosts so far have failed to deliver the killing blow which have cost them as many as three outright wins against Punjab, Railways and Hyderabad.

Even though they managed to make it to the quarter-finals based on their first innings leads, on all the three matches, Mumbai bowlers failed to bowl out the opposition on the last day, despite having them on the mat.

Adding to the home team's woes is the absence of pacer Ajit Agarkar and middle-order batsman Rohit Sharma. While Agarkar is injured, Sharma has been named in the Indian squad that will be playing Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka.

With the duo missing, the onus would be on opener Ajinkya Rahane who returned to form with an unbeaten 265 against Hyderabad. Skipper Wasim Jaffer also has been consistent through out and already has two centuries to his name in the season and the team will expect an encore from him as a good show will guarantee the hosts a spot in the next round.

Tamil Nadu, meanwhile, are sitting pretty at the top of the table with 20 points in five matches and with the return of opener Murali Vijay, they will look to consolidate their position with a clinical performance tomorrow.

But the visitors will miss spinner R Ashwin, who will join the Indian team for Twenty20 matches against Sri Lanka.
