Siddle to miss Perth Test

Siddle to miss Perth Test

Fast bowler Clinton McKay will make his debut for Australia in the third Test against the West Indies after fellow Victorian quick Peter Siddle was forced out by injury.

A second spinner is also likely to be rushed to Perth as cover after off-spinner Nathan Hauritz badly injured a finger at training.

Siddle has been in doubt since the completion of the second Test in Adelaide early last week after suffering a slight hamstring strain during the game but had declared that he would be fit to play and that McKay would have to wait a little longer for his international debut.

But Australia team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris revealed on Tuesday that Siddle had woken feeling sore with a back-related hamstring injury the cause of his problems, forcing him to be sent home to Victoria to recuperate.

And with the first Test against Pakistan at the MCG to get under way on Boxing Day Siddle is unlikely to return in time for that game and as of Tuesday has just 19 days before the second Test against Pakistan starts at the SCG.

When asked about the fitness of Shane Watson, Kountouris was adamant the all-rounder would play despite moving gingerly at training in recent days.

Hauritz meanwhile is still expected to prove his fitness for the final Test of a series against the West Indies that Australia leads 1-0, with his finger injury causing him discomfort but not affecting his bowling.

An announcement on a replacement spinner is expected later on Tuesday but either Jason Krejza or possibly Bryce McGain are the likely contenders.

The West Indies have had their own share of bad luck in the lead-up to the deciding Test with veteran batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul and opener Adrian Barath both rated only a 50-50 chance to play with finger and hamstring problems respectively.
