"Referrals will improve spirit"
ICC President David Morgan justified the Umpires Decision Reviews System, saying the reviews will help in making better decisions.
Morgan believed the system, though a little complex initially, will also improve spirit in which the game is played in the future.
The system allows teams to challenge the on-field officials' decision by seeking to have it overturned by the third television umpire and is designed to ensure obvious mistakes are corrected.
However, there the reviews have not been perfect so far, as has been seen in the ongoing Test series between Australia and the West Indies.
The system has appeared unable to provide sufficient certainty Down Under, with the third umpire sometimes over-ruling the men in the middle on the basis of questionable evidence.
However, Morgan said cricket could no longer ignore the boom of broadcast technology.
Morgan reiterated that the referral system was not the reason behind English umpire Mark Benson's decision to stand out of the second Test in Adelaide. The umpire himself had clarified that he quit the Test on health grounds.
Though Morgan believed the umpires on the elite panel were world class, he said there was no reason why they could not get some help from the third umpire if the decision was inconclusive.
The world cricket boss was convinced that the best way to go ahead with the game was to support and encourage the use of the referrals.
