Player ratings: India vs Bangladesh

Here is a look at how India and Bangladesh players performed in the second Test in Dhaka, which concluded on Wednesday.

BANGLADESH

Tamim Iqbal- 9

The 20 year old was on a pair when he took strike with Bangladesh 311 runs adrift of India on day three. By the time Zaheer Khan sent him back towards the close of play, the opening southpaw had plundered a violent 151 runs to put his side in a position of dignity. What an innings under pressure.

Imrul Kayes
- 4

After a duck in the first innings, Kayes would have been looking to make amends in the second innings but that was not to be. Checking a shot to a short of length delivery from Zaheer Khan, the left handed opener spooned a catch to a diving Dinesh Karthik at cover. An appalling Test match performance.

Junaed Siddique – 7

Like most of his colleagues in the Bangladesh batting line-up, Siddique is learning with every match. The right hander was a study in patience and grit as he dropped anchor to garner 55 runs and partner a rampaging Iqbal to frustrate the Indian attack.

Mohammad Ashraful- 4

Arguably, Bangladesh’s best batsman, Ashraful played a shocking shot in the first innings, stepping down to Pragyan Ojha, triggering a dramatic collapse in the hosts’ ranks. He looked a little more composed in the second innings but his match tally of 39 and 25 were hardly of much use.

Shakib Al Hasan- 5

The Bangladesh skipper has this knack of getting solid starts before throwing them away. A rash short against Zaheer Khan in the first innings was followed by an irresponsible slog sweep in the second, plummeting his team into dire straits. His captaincy was inexplicable when MS Dhoni batted with the tail and he did not even get into the wickets until much later.

Raquibul Hassan- 4

Experts have questioned the logic behind Hassan’s batting up the order ahead of more talented colleagues. The right-handed middle order bat did not look the part and his failure left huge holes in the team.

Mushfiqur Rahim- 5

The Bangladesh wicketkeeper is one of the most determined characters in the team. After a gutsy 30 in the first innings, Rahim remained unbeaten in the second innings when Zaheer Khan spat fire to lead India to victory. Not many will forget his hundred in the first Test under pressure.

Mahmudullah- 8

Bangladesh would have collapsed to another innings defeat had it not been for a stoic show by Madmudullah. Shakib-al-Hasan and Siddons need to figure out how long he can bat that low down the order after a gritty show in the first innings in Dhaka. He ran out of partners and was stranded on 96, four runs short of a well-deserved hundred.

Shahadat Hossain- 6

The speedster bowled with pace and venom and generated bounce from a track that helped batsmen blossom for most of the Test. Hossain was impressive with the bat too on the fourth morning, scoring a patient 40 to delay the inevitable.

Shafiul Islam- 6

A three wicket haul by Islam did not prevent India from garnering a massive first innings lead but the pacer let off some steam to trouble the famed visitors.

Rubel Hossain- 4

There was much left to be desired from Rubel, who finished with no wickets and ended up giving 115 runs. A shoddy bowling performance rounded up a forgettable Test match for the bowler.

INDIA

Virender Sehwag- 7

Calling Bangladesh an ‘ordinary’ side did not haunt him too badly after all. A quickfire fifty from Sehwag set India up for big total and feisty lead after Bangladesh’s attack had been numbed into submission.

Gautam Gambhir- 8

All eyes were set on the compact left-handed opener as he drew closer to Don Bradman’s record of six successive hundreds but was done in on 68. However, that did not stop Gambhir from equalling Viv Richards’ tally off 11 consecutive Test fifties.

Rahul Dravid- 10

‘The Wall’ had a poor first Test but was back at his sublime best in the second, rattling up his 29th hundred before he was sent off with a broken jaw. Dravid was involved in a massive 214 run stand with Sachin Tendulkar as India batted Bangladesh out if the match.

Sachin Tendulkar- 10

The Little Master cracked his second hundred of the series and the 45th of his career, adjusting masterfully to somewhat challenging conditions on day two. Tendulkar cracked a fine 143 off 182 deliveries to push Bangladesh against the wall by the end of the second day.

Murali Vijay- 6

Such has been his luck that Vijay is drafted into the playing XI only when a regular batsman is down with an injury or serving a ban. Coming into replace VVS Laxman in the second Test, the Tamil Nadu opener scored 30 before trying to step on the accelerator at the fag end of day two. However, he had played his part when the team needed him to.

Yuvraj Singh- NO RATINGS

Yuvi was injured and had no role to play in the Test. Hope he gets back in time for the second Test against South Africa.

MS Dhoni- 9

The Indian skipper is making it a habit of batting with the tail and scoring hundreds. There was another ton for the taking but Dhoni was dismissed for 89, scored mostly in the company of Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha. His use of Zaheer Khan in short bursts helped the seamer make the most of his spells. Well done, Mahi!

Harbhajan Singh- 4

India’s leading spinner did not play the first Test and was only a shadow of himself in the second. Harbhajan needs to find his bearings quickly if he has to make an impression on the South Africans in India next month.

Zaheer Khan- 10

A ten wicket haul was outstanding but two spells from Zak stood out- the first rattled the Bangladeshis on the third day towards close of play while the second saw him wipe off any hopes the hosts would have harboured of fighting back. The left arm seamer took three wickets off the final over and much like the Mumbai Test against Sri Lanka bowled India to victory.

Pragyan Ojha- 6

Ojha was preferred over Amit Mishra, who turned in a brilliant performance in the first Test and the left arm spinner did not let Dhoni down. He picked up four wickets in the Test and was instrumental, with Zaheer, in triggering a Bangla collapse on Wednesday.

Ishant Sharma- 7

The lanky pacer had been ignored for the Sri Lanka Tests but came back strongly in Bangladesh and hit bull’s eye in the first innings in Dhaka, snapping up four wickets. Ishant’s return to form ahead of the South Africa series must be a huge boost to the Indian camp.
