Australia hopeful of Siddle return

Australia hopeful of Siddle return

Australia are hopeful quick bowler Peter Siddle will return for the fourth one-day international match against Pakistan at the WACA on Friday.

But the hosts, who have already clinched the five-match series, have decided to rest Shane Watson and Doug Bollinger for the final two clashes.

Mitchell Johnson returns to the squad, while Ryan Harris has been retained after his impressive performance on Tuesday.

"The NSP has taken the opportunity to manage the workload of Shane Watson and Doug Bollinger who will return home and not be considered for selection in the last two games against Pakistan," national selection panel chairman Andrew Hilditch said.

"Ryan Harris will remain with the squad of 13 after an impressive performance in Adelaide while Mitchell Johnson will also return after having his workload managed for the first three games of this series."

Siddle, who missed the Australia Day clash in Adelaide with a sore back, should travel with the team to Perth and will have his fitness tested in the coming days.

Captain Ricky Ponting said the team had erred on the side of caution by leaving the Victorian on the sidelines on Tuesday.

"It's not going to be a week's injury. I thought if there's any doubt with him at all just give him Tuesday off and we'll just put him in cotton wool for a couple of days and hope he comes up and ready to play in Perth," Ponting said.

Australia are reluctant to make changes as Ponting believes stability plays a part in developing a winning culture.

But he did admit some players needed a rest after their hectic schedule.

"There will be some discussion about that ... with some of the guys that have done a lot of work through the Test series," Ponting said.

"It wouldn't be hard to work out the guys who have done a lot of work through the summer.

"I guess when you consider another reasonably long flight to Perth and then pretty much back to back games over there, I'm sure there'll be some discussion.

"I'll talk to the trainers and support staff and I know Andrew Hilditch is here so I'll have a chat to him."

Harris revealed it was a "dream come true" to play for Australia again after making his debut last season but was unsure if he would play again this summer.

"I didn't want to play just that one game, I want to play as much as I can," he said.

"I come and go when I'm needed and hopefully I do my job. It's good to come into a group where they accept you like you've been there for a while so it's pretty easy to make the transition."

Harris, who has had limited game time at the state level because of a knee injury, said his involvement in the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash had proven ideal preparation for the match in Adelaide.

"It's been good for me obviously fitness wise. My fitness levels weren't quite there and to get through the Big Bash, and a bit of work in the gym, they were great just to try and find some rhythm and hit the wicket hard and that's what I did," he added.

Meanwhile, wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has admitted his side have little sympathy for under-pressure Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf and will be going for the jugular in the one-day international matches at the WACA later this week.

Yousuf's leadership qualities have been questioned after his lack of success and initiative this summer and his chances of retaining the captaincy appear weaker with every loss.

If the team lose the next two matches, a 5-0 whitewash in the one-day series would not look good on the CV when he eventually faces the Pakistan Cricket Board.

It is a precarious position for the 35-year-old, but Haddin said Australia would not be holding back for his sake.

"I'm not too worried about his future," he said.

"We are obviously out there to win every cricket game we play and if that's putting pressure on the opposition captain, then so be it.

"That's not something for me to worry about or the Australian cricket team to worry about - we are trying to make the opposition team feel as uncomfortable as we can and win all the games."

Australia squad: Ponting (c), Clarke, Haddin, Harris, Hauritz, Hopes, Hussey, Johnson, Marsh, McKay, Siddle, Voges, White.
